What is the AP International Diploma (APID)?
The AP International Diploma (APID) is a globally recognized credential awarded to students who demonstrate exceptional achievement across a variety of academic disciplines. This diploma is granted to international students attending secondary schools outside the United States and to US high school students applying to universities abroad. It certifies outstanding academic excellence with a global perspective. However, the APID is not a substitute for a high school diploma.
APID Eligibility Requirements
Students must earn a score of 3 or higher on at least 5 AP Exams. Exams taken multiple times only count once—the highest score will be used for award calculation.
Students must either attend a school outside the US, US territories, and the DoDEA network or they must send AP scores to a university outside the US.
Exams must fulfill 4 content areas, outlined below:

World Languages
- Chinese Language and Culture
- French Language and Culture
- German Language and Culture
- Italian Language and Culture
- Japanese Language and Culture
- Spanish Language and Culture
- Spanish Literature and Culture
English
- English Language and Composition
- English Literature and Composition
Students must meet one of the following requirements:
- Two AP World Languages or English exams if these exams are in two different languages.
- One AP World Language or English exam, a proficiency certificate in a language not available as an AP exam, and one additional AP exam (other than the above).
Examples of Acceptable APID World Language Requirements:
- French Language and Culture + German Language and Culture
- Chinese Language and Culture + English Language and Composition
- Chinese Language and Culture + English Literature and Composition
Not Acceptable:
- English Language and Composition + English Literature and Composition
- Spanish Language and Culture + Spanish Literature and Culture
A proficiency certificate verifying a student's fluency in a language not available as an AP exam satisfies the requirement for one AP exam in the world languages category. However, students choosing this option must submit an additional AP exam from a different content area to meet the overall requirement of 5 AP exams with scores of 3 or higher to qualify for the APID. Examples when replacing an AP World Language exam:
- English Literature and Composition exam + Arabic proficiency certificate + 4 other qualifying AP exams
- Chinese Language and Culture + Korean proficiency certificate + 4 other qualifying AP exams

APID Award Process
Students do not need to apply for the APID; it is automatically awarded in the year all eligibility requirements are met. The College Board will notify students via email once the diploma has been awarded. Students can print their own APID diploma from AP Scores. School administrators have access to the AP Scores for Educators report to identify APID students through the AP Scholar Report.

Advanced Placement (AP) is a program in the United States created by the College Board. AP offers undergraduate university-level curricula and examinations to high school students. Colleges and universities in the US and around the world may grant placement and course credit to students who obtain qualifying scores on AP examinations.
The AP (Advanced Placement) program is a set of advanced courses with a difficulty level equivalent to first-year university level, designed for high school students. This program allows students to earn college credits while still in high school. AP courses and exams are widely offered in high schools and universities across the United States and are recognized by many universities worldwide.
Over the past few years we have tracked shifting policy language surrounding the use of AP scores in the college admissions process. We will continue to track these policies moving forward as we expect the role of AP scores in admissions to continue to evolve.
